About this tour

In the early 17th century, India’s opulence and riches—from exotic spices and fine silk to pottery and jewelry—attracted various European powers to establish outposts along the river Ganges, within an 80 km stretch from Kolkata. The Portuguese were the first to receive permission to set up a trading post in Bandel, followed by the Dutch in Chinsurah, the Danish in Serampore, the French in Chandannagar, and finally the British in Kolkata.

Exploring the colonial heritage of Bengal through the **Little Europe in Bengal** trail is a once-in-a-lifetime experience. This journey traces the legacy of European settlements that have withstood the test of time. A day excursion across these pre-colonial towns—rich in architecture, culture, and history—offers deep insights into the rise and fall of European colonization in the Indian subcontinent. Curated by our local experts, the **Little Europe in Bengal** tour blends historical discovery with authentic local experiences and innovative travel ideas.

Itinerary

Begin your day with a convenient pickup from your hotel or residence in Kolkata.

Begin your cultural journey with a visit to the magnificent Shri Hangseshwari Temple. Known for its unique architectural design that resembles human anatomy, this temple is a spiritual and artistic wonder.

Next, visit the iconic Hooghly Imambara — a beautiful Islamic monument featuring tall twin towers, an enormous antique clock, and intricate Persian calligraphy. It reflects the grandeur of the Nawabi period.

Explore the historic town of Chinsurah, once a Dutch colony. Visit the Dutch Cemetery, Clock Tower, and colonial churches that still preserve the Dutch influence in Bengal.

Move on to Chandannagar, a former French colony. Take a walk along the beautiful Strand, visit the French Cemetery, and the Chandannagar Museum (Institut de Chandernagore) that houses rare French-era artifacts and documents.

Your final destination is Serampore, the Danish colony of the past. Visit St. Olav’s Church, one of the oldest Danish churches in India, and admire the beautifully restored Denmark Tavern along the river.

After a full day of cultural exploration and historical discovery, you’ll be driven back to your location in Kolkata, with memories of Bengal’s forgotten European chapters.
